This four-story mental health facility lies within a 244-acre wooded site once home to the Riverview Hospital on Kwikwetlem First Nation ancestral territories.
The facility has a campus-like organization of five distinct programs that treat various psychiatric and mental health conditions for indigenous and non-indigenous youth. Bush, Bohlman partnered with the Design-Build team of HDR and PCL Constructors to complete this project for the Ministry of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services & Partnerships BC.
Designed to LEED Gold standards, the 108,000 square foot reinforced concrete structure houses the 38- bed facility and supports a range of recreational, academic and outreach programming. A reinforced concrete core wall complete with seismic tie-down anchors provides seismic lateral resistance.
Drawing from its natural context, heavy timber is used prominently for canopies and exterior shelters. Tilt-up insulated panels line the gymnasium and the facility also includes an above-grade parking garage. Spaces throughout the Healing Spirit House are intended to be welcoming and connected to their environment, creating a positive and healing environment.
